Classic Time!

Dionne - "Come Get My Lovin'", absolute classic. About half a decade before my first forays into the UK club scene, but what a bomb! They certainly don't make 'em like this anymore...

I Get Deep Yo Mix

Download at: http://soundcloud.com/david-saker/david-saker-i-get-deep-yo-mix

Everyone knows that I come into my prime when it's 4am and I'm bouncing off the walls with my eyes rolling in the back of my head. Either that, or doing my Stevie Wonder impression with my eyes chemically bonded shut with my nugget rolling and nodding... vaguely in time with the music. The reason why... obviously... is coz "I get deep yo!". So... here's my little mix for when I'm in that deep zone... tracklisting as follows:

Theo Parrish @ some dirthole in Stoke Newington (of all places?)

I was in the UK at the end of July and we went to see Theo Parrish in Stoke Newington on a Saturday evening. I can't remeber the name of the venue... maybe Bar-A-Bar... but it was a nice little intimate affair. I was still trashed from a 7am finish the previous night following escapades at Plastic People in Shoreditch but Theo started nice and slow and towards the end started tearing it up. Here's a clip I took from my favourite tune of the night... an unknown (to me anyway) re-edit of James Brown's Body Heat. It's not great quality, but you get the substance of the record, and it's a WINNER!

Here's also a little picture of the man himself from that night... (typically smoking some shit!)

Dam-Funk - Sidewayz

August Radioplayer

A website I like to check in on every now and again belongs to DJ Deep - http://djdeep.com/. He has a section called "Deep Library" in which there's numerous podcasts featuring music that he just likes. Some tunes mixed, and some not. I like the concept, and as my day job also takes up such a significant chunk of my life, not mixing records enables me to get cd's ready for the car drive to work on a regular basis. So I came up with my version... the "Radioplayer" series. I started it back in July 2008 for music I like. It's not mixed and it's barely sequenced using Adobe Audition. Here's one made recently, August 2009, and there's more to follow...

Downtempo mix... 5th year anniversary

This is a mix I did back in August 2004. During that summer I had been tapping up Fat City Records in Manchester (where a lot of the vinyl here came from), and really wanted to lay down a mix featuring a rather nice blend of soul, funk, disco & hip hop... totally eclectic. Seeing as it's almost the 5th anniversary of the mix... here it is again... still totally relevant, and having never been far from the stereo in all this time.

Anyway, here's the link:

Michael Jackson tribute (of sorts...)

Ok... I think the guy was a complete tool, of dubious morality/sanity/maturity (delete as appropriate). But, he did make some really good music and the boy could dance. I thought his early stuff, and his time in the Jackson 5, was head and shoulders over anything he did in the 90's and beyond.

So as a tribute to his recent passing... here's a great video for the Jackson 5's "I Am Love". Some hilarious dance moves!!

In my thirties and still dancing like a gooner...

Just before christmas 2008 I decided to do a new mix... dedicated to being in my thirties. No real purpose behind the track selection, other than just good tunes that keep me grooving despite me getting ever closer to the grave. All house music, on a deep tip, with a sort of old school vibe thrown in for good measure...

Anyway, here's the link:

Rollerboogietastic!

I hadn’t heard this one in ages, in fact… I can only recall ever hearing the early ‘90s Cathy Dennis cover. This is the Fonda Rae original from 1984. I was listening to an OOFT Music mix over the weekend – Live In Soul City – and they had the “touch me baby all night long” sample wedged into their Q-Tip, Breathe & Stop rework. Very nice boys… very nice indeed.

Introduction...

This be my first blog site. An outlet for my frustrated DJ inclinations, since I arrived in Bermuda in October 2005. Soul, funk and disco, let alone house music, is dead on this island. The usual shit US pop/rap music is an unrelenting assault on my aural senses. Let the headucation begin...
